Psoriatic Arthritis

Psoriatic Arthritis

Psoriatic Arthritis is a type of inflammatory arthritis that affects people who have psoriasis, a chronic skin condition. It causes pain, stiffness, and swelling in the joints, as well as patches of red, scaly skin.

Symptoms

The main symptoms of  Psoriatic Arthritis are:

  • Pain and swelling in joints, typically in the fingers and toes.
  • Stiffness, especially in the morning or after sitting for long periods.
  • Red, scaly patches of skin on the elbows, knees, scalp, or other areas of the body.
  • Fatigue and overall feeling of malaise.

Treatment

Treatment for psoriatic arthritis is aimed at reducing inflammation and managing symptoms. This can include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), and biological medications. Physical therapy and exercise can also help improve joint mobility and function. In more severe cases, surgery may be necessary to repair or replace damaged joints.

It is important for individuals with psoriasis to be aware of the risk of developing psoriatic arthritis and to discuss any joint symptoms with their healthcare provider. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent joint damage and improve the overall quality of life.
